The Wish
Event description
Reverie Theatre Group presents THE WISH: A MANUAL FOR A LAST-DITCH EFFORT TO SAVE ABORTION IN THE UNITED STATES THROUGH THEATER, a play originally developed by Justice Hehir, Dena Igusti, Phanesia Pharel, Nia Akilah Robinson, and Julia Specht, but it is meant to be evolved and adapted over time by the groups that choose to produce the work. The original collective of writers is a racially diverse group of young women and non-binary writers, and the play aims to spark conversation about abortion rights and encourage pro-choice programming. The play was created in response to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022 and the fallout of that event, including statewide abortion bans.
Championed by New Georges, and hosted on their website, THE WISH is a play that can be added to, rearranged, and performed anywhere, from couches to stages to dorm rooms to protests -- and enshrines critical abortion resources in the structure of the play. A provocation to laws like Texas and Oklahoma's that prohibit anyone from "encouraging" or "aiding and abetting abortion," the piece puts access to clinic finders and abortion pills on full display in the center of a piece of theater.
