The Yemeni Women Fighting to Preserve Their Heritage | Buffett First Friday Lunch with Brent Huffman

The Roberta Buffett Institute hosts a faculty research lunchtime talk series on the first Friday of every month. Faculty members give a half-hour talk intended for a broad, multidisciplinary audience of Northwestern students, faculty and staff, followed by a conversational Q&A. 

November’s Buffett First Friday Lunch will feature Brent Huffman, Professor and Director of Documentary Journalism at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.  

Yemen includes five UNESCO World Heritage sites, hundreds of ancient archaeological sites, sprawling temples, museums, and manuscript libraries. Many of these ancient sites remain only partially discovered, their mysteries still buried in the sand. For the past three years, Professor Huffman has been working on a feature-length documentary chronicling the work of Yemeni women to save the heritage of their country threatened by war, looting, and climate change. The Future is Written in Stone profiles the stories of four women who are taking the lead in a conservative patriarchal society to preserve, protect, and reconstruct this threatened heritage.  

Professor Huffman will share a short clip from his documentary work in progress as well as discuss why he chose to highlight the incredible heritage of Yemen and the Yemeni women risking their lives to save it. Learn more about the project in our Buffett Q&A with Professor Huffman.  

Doors open at 12:00 p.m., and lunch begins at 12:15 p.m.
