Event description

For our June Masterclass Community Minds Inc. have invited Tom Dawkins - CEO and Co-Founder of StartSomeGood. As part of our Businesses Changing the World initiative, we are holding a series of Masterclasses inviting changemakers and entrepreneurs to share their wisdom and expertise that help businesses and organisations to be more purpose-driven and effective in positively impacting their communities and to be an effective source for change in making this world a better place, particularly for marginalised and disadvantaged communities.

Tom Dawkins is an experienced social entrepreneur, having founded several non-profits and social enterprises before co-founding StartSomeGood in 2010.

Before StartSomeGood he founded Australian youth non-profit Vibewire, opened the first co-working space in Australia, was the first Digital Communications Director at Ashoka in Washington DC and was the founding Director of the Australian Changemakers Festival. Tom has been recognised with awards and fellowships from the World Summit Youth Awards, The International Youth Foundation, Nexus Summit and the Social Enterprise Awards and is a global speaker on social innovation and entrepreneurship. He is a Director of the Centre for Social Impact and the Social Enterprise Council of NSW and the ACT (SECNA).

This masterclass combines networking with a hands-on educational experience.

The Crowdfunding Formula: In this Masterclass you will learn how to tell your story, rally a community of supporters and raise the funds you need to do good!

Crowdfunding is a fantastic way to launch or grow a social enterprise or non-profit, raise funds for a cause or a creative project or fuel a grassroots movement for your community.

But the considerable majority of all crowdfunding campaigns fall short, often because of a handful of common mistakes. StartSomeGood has one of the best success rates in the industry, with 53% of projects reaching their goal (compared to 31% on Kickstarter and 13% on IndieGoGo, a typical range for most crowdfunding platforms).

This MASTERCLASS is all about making sure you and your project have the best chance of success by sharing the insights we have gained working with over 1,000 projects at StartSomeGood and will be led by StartSomeGood CEO Tom Dawkins, who is recognised as one of the leading experts and teachers on crowdfunding and online community building in Australia, in his first-ever workshop in Bankstown.

The workshop will cover common missteps, what those who are successfully raising funds are doing right and how to think through the goals and outreach strategy for your particular project.

What you will learn:

- Different crowdfunding models and how to know which is right for you
- What separates crowdfunding campaigns that succeed from those that fail
- Selecting a financial target for your campaign
- Identifying your potential supporters and how to target them
- Deciding how long to run your campaign for;
- How to craft stories that inspire support

You will also get a chance to Network with other community-minded businesses and entrepreneurs who are wanting to change the world for the better!
