Theatre of the Oppressed: Introduction to Image Theatre
Event description
Theatre of the Oppressed ("TO" for short) is a political and pedagogical tool practiced all over the world. TO can take the form of workshops, performances, legislative processes and/or direct actions that combine images, sounds, movement, and words. TO's process begins with something that can be very internal and personal, and its ultimate aim to transform communities and society into something more just.
This workshop will cover the basics of TO and Image Theatre. If TO were a tree with many branches, Image Theatre would be the trunk offering a sturdy foundation for using its tools in teaching, performing, organizing and relating to the world around us. We'll play a bunch of Image Theatre games and unpack their ideas, building skills as a group and perhaps addressing this particular political moment
Day of workshop: Please arrive early so that we can start right at 12:00 PM. Wear comfy clothes suitable for movement and be prepared to work without shoes in the studio. Workshop will end at 5:00 PM and there will be a 30 minute break about halway through.
To register: Click the "Get tickets" button and sign yourself up. The workshop is free. If you'd like to make a donation, you can do so at the workshop, or make a contribution to 34 Arts Jumpstart Campaign. All proceeds will go to supports arts programming at Studio 34.
About the facilitator: Morgan FitzPatrick Andrews has worked as an activist in West Philly since 1998 and began offering TO workshops in 2008, right after Studio 34 opened. Morgan trained with Theatre of the Oppressed's founder Augusto Boal at TOPLAB NYC, and then at Jana Sanskriti Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed in West Bengal. Morgan has presented at several Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed conferences and led TO workshops for numerous colleges and community organizations. Morgan also works as Studio 34's Arts Curator, currently makes performance with the Fluxus Brothers and teaches yoga here too.
