The Family Divide: Healing Through Estrangement from an Adult Child
Description
The Family Divide
Healing Through Estrangement From an Adult Child
When a relationship with an adult child becomes distant, strained, or completely cut off, the grief can be difficult to put into words.
Parents may find themselves replaying conversations, questioning what went wrong, wondering what they could have done differently, or holding onto hope that the relationship will someday be restored. Estrangement can bring grief, anger, confusion, shame, anxiety, and a profound sense of loss—often without the closure that accompanies other kinds of grief.
The Family Divide is a compassionate workshop created for parents navigating estrangement, limited contact, or significant relational rupture with an adult child.
Together, we’ll explore the emotional and relational impact of estrangement from both a mental health and holistic wellness perspective, helping participants better understand what is happening within the mind, body, and nervous system when an important relationship is lost or uncertain.
In this workshop, we’ll explore:
Ambiguous grief — grieving someone who is still alive but no longer present in your life in the same way
The emotional cycle of grief, anger, guilt, shame, hope, and disappointment
How relational loss and chronic uncertainty affect the nervous system and physical body
The difference between taking healthy responsibility and carrying unhealthy blame
Understanding boundaries—both your own and those set by others
Coping with unanswered questions and circumstances you cannot control
Caring for yourself while still leaving room for grief and hope
Practical tools for emotional regulation, grounding, and resilience
Finding meaning, connection, and a path forward even when reconciliation is uncertain
This workshop is not about assigning blame or deciding who was “right.” Instead, it is about learning how to heal in the present, even when the relationship itself remains unresolved.
You do not have to wait for another person to change before beginning your own healing.
An Integrative Approach to Healing
This workshop brings together mental health and holistic health perspectives to look at estrangement as a whole-person experience.
A Licensed Mental Health Counselor specializing in trauma will explore the psychological and relational impact of estrangement and introduce trauma-informed and somatic strategies for processing grief and regulating the nervous system.
A Licensed Holistic Health Practitioner and NBC Health & Wellness Coach will explore how prolonged relational stress can affect overall wellness and share practical strategies for supporting the body during periods of chronic emotional stress.
Participants will leave with a greater understanding of their experience, practical tools they can begin using immediately, and compassionate next steps for moving forward.
Come as you are. You do not need to have the answers—and you do not need to know whether reconciliation will happen—to begin healing.
Presented as part of the A Holistic Life Workshop series.
