The Future in Our Hands: Climate, Legacy & Local Action
Event description
This isn’t just another climate talk. It’s a conversation worth having.
At a time when the climate conversation can feel noisy, confusing, or even paralysing, this event brings together two thoughtful voices — one rooted in science, the other in story, to help us reconnect with what matters and what’s possible.
Dr John Price, retired physician and author, has spent recent years deep-diving into the science behind our changing climate. In this engaging, interactive session, John will gently challenge us to reflect on:
What kind of problem climate change really is
Why recent events like Australia’s floods are not just ‘natural disasters’
How we know this isn’t just another natural cycle
What it means to be a citizen when facing such a global issue
This is not about blame or guilt. It’s about understanding the Earth system, recognising what’s already happening around us, and reclaiming our agency in a world that desperately needs informed, capable citizens.
Kevin Ahearn, timber craftsman and environmental historian, brings a grounded, deeply local lens, reminding us that legacy isn’t just what we leave behind, it’s what we build now. Through stories of land, craft, and resilience, Kevin helps anchor these big issues in a way that feels human and real.
Together, John and Kevin will guide an open conversation, with questions welcomed throughout. Expect an event that evolves with its audience, where curiosity leads the way and no question is too small or too “silly”.
Whether you're climate-curious, eco-anxious, or just ready for a more meaningful kind of talk — this morning will leave you better informed, more connected, and inspired to act.
About the Speakers
Dr John Price is a retired physician who, in his own words, "used to spend most days talking with people about what’s gone wrong, and what might help." After retirement, he turned his attention to another critical issue: the health of the planet. Driven by deep concern for future generations, John immersed himself in climate science and now dedicates his time to helping others understand what the experts already know. His approach is conversational and clear, cutting through jargon to help everyday people make sense of the climate crisis and feel empowered to respond. He’s the author of The Climate for Change and the voice behind www.grandkidzfuture.com, a website dedicated to climate literacy and intergenerational responsibility.
Kevin Ahearn is a respected timber craftsman, environmental historian, and storyteller. Known for his deep knowledge of Queensland’s settler and timber history, Kevin works with salvaged wood to honour the landscapes and legacies that shaped Australia. Through his work and words, he encourages people to reconnect with place, memory, and the long view of time. Kevin’s presence in this conversation brings a balance, a reminder that the future we speak of is grounded in the stories, materials, and choices of today.
