Thinking Green: Worm Farming in Henley Brook

Kevin Smith from The Worm Shed will explain the role worms play in recycling and waste management. He will also demonstrate how to set up and maintain a worm farm.

Worm Farm Subsidy

The City of Swan offers residents and ratepayers a subsidy to get your worm farm going! Worm farming is a simple way of converting food scraps and other organic materials into nutrient rich products for the garden.

City of Swan residents and ratepayers can receive:

• A $130 subsidy on an advanced worm farm package

• A $65 subsidy on 1kg of worms.

Advanced setup:

• One Worm Café worm farm, 

• About 4,000 worms, weighing about 1kg, 

• 15 litres of castings for bedding, 

• 500g of dolomite, 

• One worm blanket, 

• One instruction booklet. 

  The package normally costs $260. The City provides a $130 subsidy, reducing the cost to $130.

Worms only:

• 1kg of worms.

  The Unit cost is $130. The City provides a $65 subsidy, reducing the cost to $65.

• You may purchase a larger quantity of worms, but the maximum subsidy for worms only is $65.

How to claim the subsidy:

1. Pre-order your worm farm when you RSVP for a City of Swan worm farming workshop.

2. Attend the workshop with proof of your address or a rates notice.

3. Pay in cash.

4. Collect your worm farm to take home, set up and enjoy.
