The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) celebrates the exciting research conducted by Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and Professional Doctorate (Research) candidates. It is an international academic competition developed by the University of Queensland to cultivate students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills.

You are invited to watch the faculty heats' winners battle it out in the UTS 3 Minute Thesis Finals, where you can vote in the People's Choice Award category.

With just three minutes to give a compelling presentation on their thesis topic and its significance, the 3MT competition encourages research candidates to consolidate their ideas and outline their research discoveries. It challenges them to tell the story of their research to a non-specialist audience: what they are doing, why it matters, and what they hope to achieve ... all in just three minutes!

The winners will receive $3,000 and represent UTS at the 2022 Virtual Asia-Pacific Competition against winners from other universities on 19 October 2022.

Associate Professor Dilek Cetindamar Kozanoglu

School of Professional Practice and Leadership, UTS

Associate Professor Dilek Cetindamar Kozanoglu joined the Faculty of Engineering and IT at UTS in 2017 as the Director of Masters in Business and Technology. Her main interest and research topics are Digital Transformations, Entrepreneurship, and Technology & Innovation Management. She serves in various prestigious journals, including IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management where she is one of the Department Editors for the Technology Management track. She received her B.S. degree from the Industrial Engineering Department at Bogazici University (BU) in Turkey, her MA degree from the Economics Department at BU, and her Ph.D. degree from the Management Department at Istanbul Technical University. She holds an "Entrepreneurship Certificate" from Harvard Business School and a "Regional Entrepreneurship Accelerator Program Certificate" from MIT.

Professor Chris Turney

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research)

Chris is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research at UTS and a Professor of Earth System Science. He is an experienced academic and industry leader who partners governments, businesses, the Third Sector, and communities with universities to form transdisciplinary teams to tackle environmental, industry, and societal challenges (#medicieffect). He supports the commercialisation and deployment of cutting-edge discoveries and informs on national and international policy. Chris champions the value of research findings in decision-making and is passionate about universities supporting the decarbonization of the global economy to reach a net-zero economy.

Caroline Porto Valente

2020 3MT Peoples Choice Award Winner

After 10 years of practice and education in green buildings and energy efficiency in Brazil, Caroline moved to Australia in 2017 to expand her professional and academic skills.

She recently completed a Ph.D. program at UTS. Her thesis explores the extent, causes, and impacts of energy poverty among older low-income households in poor housing conditions – an emerging issue in Australia.

During her doctoral years, Caroline raised awareness about this topic through various media channels and won the 2020 UTS 3MT People’s Choice Award.

Since January 2022, Caroline serves as a Senior Policy Associate in the Energy System Transition team at Energy Consumers Australia – the independent, national voice for residential and small business energy consumers. She works to ensure consumers have their values, expectations and needs met through a modern, flexible and resilient energy
