Thunderbolts Way

 Monday 13th to Friday 17th February 2023

Thunderbolts Way is a 290-kilometre country road located in the Northern Tablelands region of New South Wales, Australia. The road links Gloucester to Walcha, Uralla, where it very briefly joins the New England Highway and, to Copes Creek, 16 km south of the Gwydir Highway intersection at Inverell. Wikipedia

Join Port Bus for five days and four nights as we explore Thunderbolts Way.

Day One:

Pick-ups commence by 08:30 we then head South to the National Motorcycle Museum. Housing Australia’s largest collection of vintages, veteran, and classic motorcycles. Our next stop is the Gloucester District Historical Society Museum. Take a step back in time and discover a world from a bygone era. Once you have finished browsing enjoy some free time to look around Gloucester. Grab a bit to eat before we head off at 16:15. Checking in to Gloucester Country Lodge. Freshen up before we head off to the Hillview Herb Farm for a tour of Hillview’s edible herb and fruit gardens, tastings, and dinner.

Day Two:

After breakfast we’ll checkout and depart by 08:30 and off to the Mountain Maid Gold Mine which was one of New South Wales’s longest running operation gold mines, discovered in 1876. We take a tour and morning tea. Our next venue is New England Cheese. (TBC) We will enjoy tastings and lunch. Time to check in to the Walcha Motel. Unpack and be ready to go by 15:00 for our tour of the Walcha Pioneer Cottage and Museum. The complex comprises a variety of historical buildings on the original land grant of 1858. Take a wander around town then freshen up ready for a 450-metre stroll to dinner at the Commercial Hotel.

Day Three:

After your in room continental breakfast pack, we will checkout and depart by 09:00. At Sunhill Dairy Goats enjoy tasting their home-made Farmhouse Goat Cheeses and visit their farm shop. A bit of gravel road so we can pop out and visit the Gostwyck Chapel, Gostwyck. Built in 1921 in memory of Major Clive Collingwood Dangar. Lunch today is at the McCrossins Mill Museum, Uralla after a tour. The Mill was built in 1870 that has been lovingly restored and now houses a multi-award-winning Museum, Gallery, and Function Centre. Heading out to Copeton Dam for a look see and a Port Bus cuppa stop. The dam is one of the largest inland dams in NSW with a capacity of 1,364,000 megalitres, three times that of Sydney Harbour! Tonight, we setup camp at Inverell RSM. Dinner is onsite.

Day Four:

After breakfast we head of into town for some free time in Inverell. Moving onto the National Transport Museum for a self-guided tour. You can see examples of over 100 years of transport in Australia. Before departing we will have our lunch box pack and then head over to Olives of Beaulieu for tastings. The olive grove is a family-owned business. Back to our accommodation you have some free time before dinner at 18:00.

Day Five:

It’s the last time you must pack your bag! Checking out and departing by 08:30 we head to the Silent Hands Café, Guyra for morning tea. Lianne Cook the owner credits her deafness for her success. Don’t leave without a pic with the Big Lamb. Lunch today is in Bellingen at the Old Butter Factory Café with a historic and scenic environment. After lunch take some time to browse the interesting array of shops before departing at 15:45. Drop offs commence from the Donut around 17:30.
