Thu, 12 Nov, 8pm - 9:30pm EST

Description

Join the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) and the Australian Association of Animal Sciences (AAAS) VIC/TAS Branch for a thought-provoking 90-minute webinar exploring Sustainable Livestock Production in Practice.

This informative session will bring together leading experts to discuss practical, research-driven approaches to enhancing the sustainability, productivity, and long-term resilience of livestock production systems in Australia.

The webinar will feature Professor Richard Eckard from the University of Melbourne, who will present on carbon farming and carbon accounting. His presentation will explore how these approaches can support the transition towards carbon-neutral agriculture while helping producers make informed and profitable on-farm decisions.

The second presentation will be delivered by Professor Jennie Pryce, Research Director of Genomic and Cellular Sciences at Agriculture Victoria and a Professor at La Trobe University, focusing on breeding a lower-carbon dairy cow: genetics, efficiency and methane. Professor Pryce will share the latest advances in genetic selection for lower methane-emitting dairy cattle and provide an update on Australia's progress towards developing more environmentally sustainable and efficient dairy herds.
The webinar will conclude with a Q&A session, providing attendees with the opportunity to ask questions about the topics discussed, and gain further insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the livestock industry.

This webinar offers a valuable opportunity for producers, researchers, industry professionals and student with an interest in sustainable agriculture to gain insights from leading experts, engage in discussion, and explore the innovations shaping the future of livestock production in Australia.

Speakers

Webinar Host - Doctor Apeh Omede
Senior Lecturer in Animal Production, Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture

Dr Apeh Omede leads the teaching activities of all Animal Science related units at the University of Tasmania. He also leads the small ruminant research program at the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, where he is developing novel natural bioactive feed additives for sustainable ruminant livestock, with application in early-life nutrition and grazing systems in livestock animals. Apeh is interested in researching the interphase between nutritional strategies for sustainable animal production and environmental sustainability. He has research experience in both monogastric and ruminant nutrition and digestive physiology.

Associate Professor Jeremy Cottrell
Animal Science School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences, University of Melbourne and President Victoria & Tasmanian Branch Australian Association of Animal Sciences

Jeremy is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences (SAFES) at the University of Melbourne. He lectures on topics such as animal physiology and nutrition and maintains a diverse research program from reproduction through to meat quality, but a central theme of stress physiology, impacts on agricultural breeds and amelioration strategies.

Professor Richard Eckard
Research Fellow, University of Melbourne

Professor Richard Eckard is Professor of Carbon Farming at the University of Melbourne and National Program Leader for the Carbon Research Centre for Net Zero Agriculture. A leading expert in climate change and agriculture, his work focuses on carbon farming, carbon accounting, net-zero agriculture and climate adaptation. He developed Australia's first on-farm carbon accounting tools, now the national standard, and his research underpins six Australian carbon offset methods. A trusted adviser to governments and international organisations,
Richard was named among Reuters' 1,000 most influential climate scientists and, in 2026, received the Cooperative Research Australia Lifetime Achievement Award for bridging agricultural science and industry.

Professor Jennie Pryce
Research Director of Genomic and Cellular Sciences, Agriculture Victoria and La Trobe University

Jennie is an internationally recognised leader in dairy cattle genetics, with research focused on improving productivity, sustainability, and resilience in livestock systems. Her work has advanced the use of genomics in dairy breeding and is contributing to the development of more efficient, lower methane-emitting dairy cattle. Jennie works closely with industry partners across Australia and internationally to translate research into practical outcomes for farmers and the livestock sector.
