Mary River Fishing Competition

Event Details

•          Check in From 7:00 am, Competition ends: 11:30 am, Weigh in: 11.45 am

•          Location: Petrie Park boat ramp, Van Doorn Rd, Tiaro

•         Fishing area: ~35 km of the ponded section of the Mary River above the Tiaro barrage

•         Entry fee: $10 per adult (16years +) $5 for juniors up to 10 years and 11-16 years

• Register and pay no later than Friday 15th May 2026

• Parking: Gold coin donation

Competition Categories

• Biggest fork-tailed catfish by size and weight

• Most large catfish by weight - Limit of 20 catfish per person

• Most tilapia – non-native pest species. No catch limit. All tilapia must be returned at weigh-in for burial.

• Most Sooty grunter – not native to the Mary River system. No catch limit.

• Most Barred grunter – not native to the Mary River system. No catch limit.

Rules

• Only registered entrants eligible for prizes

• Only barbless and non stainless steel hooks

• Limit of 50 entries

• All fish must be fresh

• No burley

• Boating regulations and safety strictly enforced

• Fishing from banks permitted where possible

Extras

·          Sausage sizzle and cold drinks available

All proceeds donated to Tiaro Landcare Group to support research for the critically endangered Mary River turtle
