Situated between choreography, performance, installation and concert, Making Time considers how collective attention and connection are negotiated between bodies, images and mediated environments.
At its centre is a peculiar human-badger hybrid figure, appearing through projected video alongside a shifting chorus of synthetic voices and guides. The work creates an unusual encounter between audience, figure and the systems that shape their relationship. Through moments of participation, dialogue and shifting attention, familiar modes of watching and engaging are gently unsettled, opening up different ways of perceiving what is happening and how we might be together.
Making Time speaks to a cultural moment of growing isolation and mediated connection. It dwells in the surreal territory of disembodied communication, and in the possibility of authentic collective experiences within increasingly mediated social worlds.
Created by Tim Darbyshire with creative consultants including Thembi Soddell (sound), Jude Anderson (dramaturgy), Silvana Mangano (video), and local participants.
Further information
Tim Darbyshire is a choreographer and performer working across dance, performance and installation to create immersive worlds that oscillate between transformative and unpredictable patterns. His work investigates how bodies operate within mechanical, sonic and social systems, drawing audiences into terrains of intimacy, disorientation and quiet absurdity.
Over the past two decades Tim has developed a body of experimental work that includes More or Less Concrete, Stampede the Stampede, Tainted Title and Significant Encounters, presenting his work across Australia and internationally at contexts such as Dance Massive, Arts House, Noorderzon Festival (NL), Tanzhaus Zürich, Every Body’s Spectacular (IS) and Kampnagel (DE).
Tim is a co-founder of the international artist network Sweet & Tender Collaborations, exploring alternative modes of cultural production, and has collaborated with artists including Vera Mantero, Meg Stuart, Christine De Smedt, Shelley Lasica, Angela Goh and Brian Fuata. Based in regional Victoria, he continues to explore how experimental choreographic practice can unsettle familiar rhythms of time, attention and togetherness.
