Timber marquetry with the laser cutter
Description
Timber marquetry with the laser cutter
This workshop introduces TAS teachers to contemporary timber decoration, digital fabrication and classroom-ready project design through the development of a laser-cut marquetry outcome. Before attending the workshop, participants are required to complete specified WHS workshop safety modules online through OnGuard. The OnGuard access link and list of required modules will be provided in advance. This preparation ensures that you will arrive with an understanding of essential workshop safety requirements and are ready to focus on practical skill development.
During the focused 6-hour practical workshop, you will explore marquetry principles, timber veneer and substrate selection, design file preparation, vector drawing considerations, testing, laser cutter set-up and safe operation. Participants will develop, refine and manufacture a timber marquetry piece using digital design and laser cutting processes, while considering how the project can be adapted for different levels of student skill, workshop access and classroom time.
Technical notes and supporting resources will be provided during the workshop to assist participants with the practical activities and future classroom implementation.
The course connects materials, production processes, digital design, safe workshop practice and design thinking in ways that align with Technology 7–8 project-based learning. Participants will leave with a completed exemplar, practical strategies for sequencing the project in the classroom, and a clearer understanding of how laser cutting can extend traditional timber decoration techniques while supporting student creativity, precision, problem solving and the safe use of contemporary technologies.
