Timebank Talk: Astronomy and Space Junk with Professor Andy Lawrence

"Astronomy is fascinating, beautiful, and inspiring. But isn't it basically useless, a pure academic pursuit of no practical value?

I will show that this is definitely not the case, explaining how astronomy contributes to science, technology, the economy, and education.

However our study of the sky is now under threat - from light pollution and from new mega-constellations of satellites streaking across the night sky. I will explain the problem and what we can do about it."

Andy Lawrence is Professor of Astronomy and a resident of Portobello since 2023. When not fretting about space junk, he studies giant black holes in the centres of galaxies.

Following the talk, there will be refreshments and time for discussion.

This Portobello Timebank event is FREE but we need you to book so we know how many to expect. We welcome donations to help cover our costs.
