Timothy Blackman is a Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington based singer-songwriter, recording artist and founder of independent Aotearoa New Zealand record label Home Alone.
Since his first EP in 2006, Blackman has released a string of acclaimed records such as Modern Sprawl, I've Never Lived, Everyone Needs Something to Hold On To and Brightest Days. Blackman grew up in the Wellington region, began playing violin at five and guitar at ten, and was performing in bands around the Lower Hutt/Wellington area as a teenager.
His music has since taken him from the bedrooms and small venues of Aotearoa to stages across Europe, the UK, United States and Australia, where he has performed alongside artists including The Mountain Goats and Scout Niblett. His music sits in an intimate space, flitting somewhere between the introspective songwriting of Bill Callahan and Bonnie Prince Billy, and the DIY spirit of New Zealand icon Chris Knox. His songs are personal and unvarnished: thoughtful, melancholic and often quietly funny, with a fascination for place, memory, displacement and the strange details of everyday life.
