Tinker Tribe - Monthly Meetup 11 V2 (October 2026)
Description
This is the August meeting for our future makerspace; which means for lively discussion!
This is for people who enjoy sharing projects and ideas. This group might be for you if you watch YouTubers like Clickspring, AVE, Colin Furze, This Old Tony, Not An Engineer, and/or more.
We will take this opportunity to socialise and discuss this new makerspace in the city of Ipswich.
You will have the opportunity to ask:
How this new makerspace will be uniquely positioned for the future in both Ipswich and Brisbane
our targets, milestones and timeframes
What has worked well and what hasn't for similar organisations
the planned structure of the organisation
events and opportunities for new makerspace
You will also have the opportunity to hear the history of makerspaces/hackerspaces and the ways they have improved over the years.
These meetups are an excellent opportunity to network with similar minded individuals.
Each person who attends this meeting will be part of the early team in a rapidly growing community organisation.
FAQs
- How do I get there?
You can drive, train or bus to the Ipswich city centre. If driving, it is best to park in the underground parking. The first 3 hours are free. The General Public is located below the Hoyts Ipswich cinema.
Car Parking:
Nicholas Street Precinct Carpark
(Accessable from Bremer Street) - Is this like a men's shed?
Makerspace and Men's Sheds are both community workshops; however, this is where the similarities end.
While men's sheds have a focus on men's mental health, maker spaces focus on technology and experimentation.
Mixed membership, usually younger and technically inclined. There are many other differences; however, those vary from group to group as the culture is made by the members.
- Will I need to pay a membership fee?
This is still open to discussion, however there has been a general consensus.
"If we charge a high membership fee, members will feel confused when the executive explore new ideas for fund-raising."
We don't intend to charge much for membership, however there will be a membership fee.
While many makerspaces have been increasing membership fees to cover the costs of running their space, we don't feel there is any fee that would cover all the costs of a makerspace.
We don't want to copy makerspaces that seek funding by renting equipment time and charging for resources; as this becomes an obstacle for community projects.
We will fund-raise through strategic partnerships and community projects.
