Tinkler, Schwing, Shannon
Description
Three of Australia's most distinct and forward-thinking improvisers - trumpeter Scott Tinkler, guitarist Julius Schwing and composer/bandleader Benjamin Shannon - are thrilled to be performing together for JMI Live co presented by the Brisbane International Jazz Festival.
Having played together sporadically since meeting in 2017, the trio moves freely across the improvisational gamut, each bringing their own unique approach to jazz, contemporary and extended practices.
Tinkler has been performing professionally since 1983, celebrated for his work with ensembles including the Australian Art Orchestra and The Paul Grabowsky Quintet, alongside international artists such as Joe Lovano and Branford Marsalis, with a career-long interest in cross-cultural collaboration.
Schwing, an improvising guitarist from Bruny Island, Lutruwita/Tasmania, has performed internationally since the age of thirteen, earning three Freedman Jazz Fellowship nominations and a 2023 APRA/AMCOS Art Music Award, with 12 albums released on his own label, Isthmus Music.
Shannon, from Nambour on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, has built a distinctive practice across experimental, improvised and jazz music, performing alongside Grammy and ARIA-winning artists, and was awarded the 2026 APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund for his work across projects including Milton Man Gogh and Brisbane Conduction Orchestra.
Together, this trio promises a rare and singular meeting of three of Australia's most adventurous musical voices.
