The Early Doors Club at ST Chad's Church w/ Toria Wooff
Description
Toria Wooff, live at St Chad's Church
Saturday March 13th, doors 5pm
Lancashire songwriter Toria Wooff brings her Aleister album tour to St Chad's, her second full length record and, in many ways, the one she's been trying to make all along.
Written in a brief burst between finishing her self-titled debut and its release, Aleister leans into a darker, more lo-fi sound, eleven brooding folk songs that echo the skewed folk records drifting through the outskirts of the 60s and 70s. Through that foggy, enigmatic sound, Wooff unpicks the grief that ran tightly through her earlier work, exploring it in ways both direct and metaphorical.
A proud Boltonian who grew up on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, Wooff draws deeply on the landscape around her, its windswept imagery, its quiet resilience, running through songs like Wintering and House On The Hill. Folk tradition collides with gothic literature, northern landscapes brush against the occult, and deeply personal experience sits comfortably beside ancient mythology.
Produced by long-time collaborator James Wyatt, the record trades the pedal steel of her debut for tape saturation, drones, vintage keyboards and richly textured acoustic instrumentation, pulling vivid inspiration from British and Irish folk recordings of the era without ever leaning into nostalgia.
It's a genuinely atmospheric record, and St Chad's feels like exactly the right room to hear it in.
