Description

Take a tour of the Eisenmenger House, a 1960s Brisbane home designed by architect Barry Walduck and a rare surviving example of the Case Study House influence in Queensland.

In the early 1960s, Mr and Mrs Eisenmenger commissioned Brisbane-based architect Barry Walduck to design a home on a sloping corner plot in Carina, with as much space as possible in the living and dining areas to accommodate a fair amount of entertaining.

Walduck designed a T-shaped plan, with the living areas on the ground floor along the long stroke of the T and the bedrooms lined up along the short arm, four steps higher. The living room, dining room, and kitchen formed one generous open space, overlooked from an elevated passageway providing access to the bedrooms. A large exposed timber beam running across the ceiling marked the divide between living and dining.

The house was constructed entirely of white-painted brick, chamferboard, and glass, giving the building the brightness and lightness Walduck admired in the Californian Case Study Houses.
