Now is your chance for an insider’s look into some of UMZM’s most interesting specimens!

Join us for a tour of the Philip L. Wright Zoological Collection at the University of Montana, led by curator Katrina Derieg! Participants will get up close and personal with specimens from around the world while learning about how museum collections contribute to cutting edge science. 

The UMZM is the repository for vertebrate specimens collected by University of Montana researchers, as well as specimens from the Montana Natural Heritage Program, the Montana Natural History Center, Flathead Lake Biological Station, the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and various affiliated researchers and groups in the region. While the UMZM focuses on birds and mammals of the northern Rocky Mountains, it is also home to scientifically and educationally valuable specimens from around the world. The museum has a growing number of tissues, parasites, photographs, and other materials for documenting and studying patterns of biodiversity across space and through time.

ABOUT KATRINA DERIEG: Katrina is a museum professional and mammalogist whose work bridges systematics, natural history collections, and public-facing science. She is currently Curator and Museum Collections & Outreach Coordinator at the Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum at the University of Montana, following five years as Collections Manager of Vertebrate Zoology at the Natural History Museum of Utah. Her research focuses on the systematics, phylogeography, and ecology of small mammals of western North America, with broader interests in integrating natural history collections and community-engaged science. She received both her B.A. and M.S. in Biology from the University of New Mexico.
