Toward heat resilient families in northern Melbourne/Naarm
Event description
Join us for a research webinar on the lived experience of summer heat for women and their families in Melbourne’s north.
Extreme heat events are likely to become more frequent, and local councils and organisations have a role in protecting public health. Women and children are particularly susceptible to heat, yet little is known about how ‘keep cool’ advice aligns with the home-bound and time sensitive daily routines of families.
The research project involved focus groups with local women and a workshop with local stakeholders to gather their experiences and views on heat resilience. In the webinar, you will learn about the social, environmental and gender influences that shape how families navigate summer heat events in a changing climate and suggestions on how they may be better supported.
Speakers will include
· Dr Sarah Robertson, RMIT University’s Centre for Urban Research,
· Mara Baveira, Merri-bek City Council
· Emma Bacon, Sweltering Cities
· Dr Nicola Willand, RMIT University
The project was funded by Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation and conducted in partnership with Merri-bek City Council and Sweltering Cities.
