Traces of Place: Photography, Sound and Poetry Workshop
Description
Join us for a special day as part of Echoes in the Pavement: SPACED Know Thy Neighbour #4 Residency, a photography, sound and poetry workshop exploring how we see, hear and remember a place through the small traces it leaves behind.
What can a footprint tell us? What stories live within a worn path, a weathered brick or a mark left behind? What happens when we see a familiar place through someone else’s eyes?
Led by artists Mohammed 'Ayo Busari' and Ken Meyer with Blue Joy Theatre Company, this two-hour workshop invites participants into a creative space to explore Garvey Park through photography, sound and poetry.
Beginning with a guided photography walk, participants will look closely at the park and its bricks, capturing overlooked details, textures, patterns and traces of human presence using their phones.
This workshop is for:
People who are curious about seeing their surroundings differently
Anyone interested in photography, sound, poetry or creative storytelling
Anyone looking to build confidence using photography and creative writing as tools for expression
People wanting to explore place, memory and belonging through creative practice
Anyone who enjoys making, experimenting and sharing ideas with others
Together, participants will reflect on what place means to them, photograph Garvey Park and its surrounding bricks, and use another participant's photograph as a creative prompt for writing poetry.
Participants will encounter their image through sound, moving depth and the original photograph, before transforming what they see, hear and feel into words.
Along the way, they will explore creative techniques including observation, sensory writing, image-making, chance and poetry, with opportunities to share their work in a supportive and welcoming environment if they want to.
Inspired by themes of place, memory, traces, connection and collective storytelling, the workshop blends guided photography, experimental sound, creative writing and poetry to create a shared archive of Garvey Park, built from the perspectives of the people who experience it.
No photography, sound, or poetry experience is needed; just bring your phone (internet connection required), headphones (recommended), powerbank (just in case), a notebook, a pen, curiosity, and a willingness to look a little closer. Please note that some activities may take place off paved paths and involve uneven ground.
Registration is required for this event. If you have any questions about this event or need assistance booking, please contact the City's Arts and Place team on 9477 7248 or via email at artsandplace@belmont.wa.gov.au.
