Introduction:
Endometriosis refers to the presence of functional endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. Common sites of endometrial implantation include the myometrium, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the peritoneum within the pelvic cavity. Less commonly, it may involve pelvic organs, and in rare cases, extrapelvic tissues. The most common symptoms of endometriosis include abdominal pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, and infertility. This course will introduce the use of Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of endometriosis, as well as the role of herbal therapy when used in conjunction with conventional Western medicine.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) plays three main roles in the treatment of endometriosis:
(1) Alleviating the side effects of Western medical treatments, (2) Controlling symptoms, and (3) Modifying the patient’s underlying constitution that predisposes to endometriosis. The fundamental TCM pattern associated with endometriosis is blood stasis (yū zhèng).
This course will explore the use of Chinese herbs, including classical formulas, based on the principle of resolving blood stasis, to achieve therapeutic goals in managing endometriosis.
Learning Objectives:
1. To understand the diagnosis and symptoms of endometriosis.
2. To explore Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approaches to treating endometriosis.
3. To examine how Chinese herbal medicine can support Western medical treatment of endometriosis.
4. To analyze the role and variations of blood stasis (yū zhèng) patterns in endometriosis.
5. To recognize the benefits of using Chinese herbal medicine in patients with endometriosis.
