TRANSFORM AND CONFESS: Using Symbols To Tell Universal Stories Through Poetry.
In this workshop led by Jay Morris, we will describe how symbols have been used to tell stories in myths, poems, and literature. We’ll also work through examples and exercises for using symbols to create a personal mythology you can draw from when writing your poems.
JAY MORRIS (he/they) is a Georgia poet born in Athens and based in Atlanta. They stared performing poetry in 2011 at the Athens World of Mouth Poetry series and have gone on to perform and organize poetry events in both the Athens and the Atlanta creative communities like Geotry, Symposium, and the 316 Atlanta -to-Athens Poet Showcase. Jay has published four poetry collections: Black Teenager, Reverse Bastard, AUDIT, limerence breaker, and has a forthcoming collection “five bulls, five remembrances,” in the works.
In addition to being featured in Wussy Mag, Rootwork Journal, the Athens Word of Mouth Anthology series, and TESSERACT, Jay’s work was selected for the MARTA Artbound poetry contest in 2023. One of their poems will be painted on a MARTA station.
