Wed, Aug 13, 12pm - Aug 20, 3pm EDT

Event description

When it comes to advancing racial equity, white women who have management or supervisory positions have distinctive opportunities and challenges. Many white women who care about racial justice want to understand how our privilege and lack of cross-cultural skills create barriers for People of Color. We are concerned about causing harm with our microaggressions and biases and simultaneously worry about backlash for missteps. These dynamics can prevent us from creating mutually respectful relationships with colleagues of color, and from providing employees of color the guidance they deserve.

This workshop, in two parts on August 13th and 20th, will support participants to deepen awareness of the combination of institutional power, privilege, and stereotypes white women leaders must navigate and can perpetuate. Using case studies, personas, and real workplace examples, we’ll provide space for interactive small and large group discussion. Participants will leave better able to name and take responsibility for putting racial equity values into our leadership practices, becoming more compassionate anti-racist managers and supervisors.

Session One Focus

  • Setting a context for white women as organizational leaders.

  • Introducing a Power Analysis that identifies where white women fit given the role of patriarchy and white privilege within an institutional hierarchy.

  • Investigating common white women manager/supervisor personas to deepen self-reflection and awareness

Session Two Focus

  • Understanding how the dynamics of sympathy, empathy, and compassion inform our behaviors

as white women managers and supervisors.

  • Learning and practicing a tool for navigating cross-racial tension between supervisees.

  • Making commitments for change – Planning your next step in putting racial equity values into practice.

Participants will have an opportunity to sign up for follow-up coaching session(s) to address questions that arise during the workshop, get support implementing new strategies, and/or gain insights into their current practices.

This session is designed primarily for an audience of white women interested in growing their anti-racist leadership practices. Please see our below for additional information.
