The Future Sounds Different is an exploration of innovation, specifically in the Australian music industry, hosted by the Australian Institute of Music (AIM) iHub and Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA).

The event features a collection of talks and performances that shine a light on where the industry is heading next, and the people who are leading us there. You’ll get a front row seat into the future of the music industry, meet the founders who are paving the way for generations to come.

A jazz odyssey to carry the listener through sense, time and space, Transitions will feature three thought-provoking and inspiring performances by Australia’s most accomplished jazz artists and modernizing young musicians.

Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as “so distinctive as to be an innovator in her own right” percussionist Chloe Kim leads her trio on a musical voyage of exploration and discovery ahead of a rare solo performance by multi award-wining pianist/composer Paul Grabowsky. Closing the program, Vazesh (Rose/Swanton/Sadeghi) launches a new album “The Sacred Key” - a celebration of long-form improvisations inspired by the Radif and the traditional music of Iran.

During the talk from Stephen Hunt, expect to hear stories about:

    • Artificial intelligence attempting to replicate composers and daring to complete their unfinished symphonies
    • Virtual reality bringing the live music experience to you, at home
    • The connection between mental health and music; and
    • The positive impact that music can have on the lives of those around the world who suffer from cognitive decline (e.g. dementia and Alzheimer’s).
