Transitions talks by Architects Declare - #10 Designing the Future with Bamboo: Regenerative Materials and the 10-Year Roadmap for Change

Join us to hear Jennifer Snyders of House of Bamboo to discuss Designing the Future with Bamboo: Regenerative Materials and the 10-Year Roadmap for Change.

House of Bamboo are pioneers in developing a bamboo industry in Australia. Jennifer will discuss their involvement with the Bamboo Society of Australia’s groundbreaking Next Frontier Summit held in July 2025, delivered in conjunction with Mansfield Advisory Jeremy Mansfield OAM. This was an opportunity for industry leaders to endorse a comprehensive 10-year roadmap integrating structural bamboo into Australian construction, reforestation and climate strategies. This marks a crucial turning point in positioning bamboo as a cornerstone of Australia’s sustainable materials landscape. Drawing together engineers, architects, policy makers, researchers and investors, the summit was attended by several global experts, including Neil Thomas MBE from Atelier One and Professor Yan Xiao from Zhejiang University in China, the lead engineer on the world's first seven-storey mass bamboo building. Industry leaders discussed issues such as regulatory certification, scaling and production, investment, funding and market awareness, creating defined strategies to help the bamboo movement make inroads in Australia.

As a pioneer in this field, House of Bamboo is contributing to the 10 year roadmap for the development of bamboo use in Australia, with a focus on the potential for engineered structural bamboo. They play a leading role in inspiring, educating, and showcasing what bamboo can truly achieve. House of Bamboo continues to lead with innovative, sustainable design solutions that outperform many timber alternatives and tread more lightly on the planet. 

Jennifer will also discuss recently awarded case studies featuring engineered bamboo, including The First Building at Bradfield City Centre by Hassell (NSW Premier's Prize at the 2025 NSW Architecture Awards, Award for Sustainable Architecture & Commendation for Commercial Architecture), and Amphora at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium by Hachem (Best Restaurant/Bar Design (Australia & Pacific) and Lighting Design (Global)). These projects prove what is possible when engineered bamboo meets bold architectural ambition.
