Trauma Awareness and Self-Care for Journalists and Writers
Event description
As journalists and writers, so often we find ourselves talking to people who share personal and distressing information.
Taking a trauma-informed approach means understanding where a person is coming from, why they respond/behave the way they do, and how to deal with them with sensitivity and empathy.
This hour-long webinar explains what trauma/vicarious trauma is, how to take a trauma-informed approach, and tools to look after yourself when dealing with difficult people and topics.
There'll be time for questions too.
ABOUT KAREN:
A journalist for more than 35 years, I have experienced vicarious trauma through the stories I have covered. I am passionate about making things better for journalists and writers, and their interview subjects, as a way to support empathetic and ethical journalism. I was a member of the ABC's Peer Support program for 6 years, and chair of the Dart Centre Asia Pacific (which focuses on journalism and trauma) from 2020 to 2022. I've delivered trauma awareness training to journalists, lawyers, unionists and more.
