Trauma Informed Care Training for volunteer biographers
Event description
Hearing people tell stories about their life is core business for palliative care volunteer biographers. The stories they hear might be moving, inspiring, or surprising, but there is always a chance that they will also include traumatic experiences. Understanding the principles of Trauma Informed Care will be of benefit when these circumstances arise.
In this 1.5 hour online training, volunteers will be taught the principles of Trauma Informed Care and given an introduction to:
- Understanding trauma
- Recognising signs of trauma
- Responding to trauma
- Establishing safe, trusting relationships
- Self-care for volunteers
- Resources for further learning and assistance
Upon completion, volunteers will have tools they can use in every interaction to support people who may have experienced trauma. They will be equipped to communicate effectively, be respectful of each person's unique life journey, and avoid the risks of creating further harm.
Before the session, participants will be sent some case studies. Please read them prior to the training and bring them to refer to and discuss during training.
