Trauma-informed community development recognises the widespread impact of trauma on individuals and communities. It aims to foster safe, supportive environments by integrating an understanding of trauma into policies, practices, and relationships — supporting healing and resilience at every level.

Throughout this workshop, we will explore practical strategies tailored to the Aotearoa context, with a particular focus on the cultural dimensions of trauma and trauma-informed practice. Participants will gain insights into how to incorporate trauma awareness into their work, foster trust, and build environments that promote wellbeing.

Dr. Nicola Atwool is a former Associate Professor in the Social and Community Work Programme at the University of Otago. With qualifications in social work and child psychotherapy, her extensive experience includes roles with Oranga Tamariki and as a principal advisor for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner. Nicola’s research aims to influence policy and practice to improve outcomes for children and young people exposed to adversity. Her unique blend of academic, policy, and practitioner experience allows her to bridge the worlds of theory and real-world application.
