In this online webinar we will examine the long-term effects of Complex Developmental Trauma (CDT) on children. We will differentiate it from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and examine how it impacts are felt through the lifespan. Recommendations for counsellors working with clients suffering from CDT will be offered.

- Understanding the impact of neglect on neuronal growth in children.
- Explain the role that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have on client’s resilience.
- Present Van der Kolk’s overview of the trauma research field and what has been missing.
- Present Neufeld’s model of how healthy attachment develops and is maintained across the lifespan.
- Clinical application to working with clients who have suffered CDT.

Dr Ruth Lawson-McConnell has 32 years of counselling experience in Scotland, Canada and New Zealand. Since arriving in New Zealand 14 years ago she has been a senior lecturer on Laidlaw College’s Bachelor of Counselling degree, as well as working in private practice. She currently divides her time between counselling, parenting consulting, supervision, presenting professional development seminars, conference speaking, and some adjunct lecturing.
