Dates:
Sept 8, 15, 22nd; Oct 13th and 27th; and Nov 3rd and 10th (Nov 10th is our reserve/special interest date).

You are invited to join a series of sessionsp that aim to help you and your adolescent manage the many emotional challenges of this stage of life. Tuning in to Teens® is a six-week parenting program run one evening a week for two hours. We will learn new ways of managing our own and our adolescents' emotions in ways that help us remain close and keep communicating. By strengthening these skills, you are less likely to have as much conflict with your young person and your teen is more likely to talk to you about the challenging issues they face. These are factors that have been found to reduce the risk of mental health and substance abuse problems.

The course is suitable for;

  • parents, carers and mentors of young people experiencing the usual ups and downs of growing up,

  • parents, carers and mentors supporting young people who have experienced challenges such as parental separation, learning difficulties and disability, trauma, and grief and loss.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence is about using your emotions to guide you through the world.  It is about being able to use your knowledge of emotions to make decisions, to calm yourself down, to manage anger and conflict, to help you in your relationships with people, to understand what is happening in social situations, and to assist you in any aspects of life that involves you and another person.

Why is Emotional Intelligence important?

Research has shown that adolescents with greater emotional intelligence:

·       are more aware, assertive and strong in situations of peer pressure

·       have greater success making friends

·       are more able to manage conflict with peers

·       are better prepared to cope when upset or angry

·       have fewer mental health and substance abuse difficulties

·       have more stable and satisfying relationships as adults

·       have greater career success… Emotional Intelligence may be a better predictor of academic and career success than IQ!

When parents focus on helping their teen learn about emotions and manage their emotions skillfully, the young person is more likely to demonstrate higher emotional intelligence. In this program we will teach parents, carers and mentors what to do to help these skills develop, and in doing so we can expect our young people to better manage the transition years to adulthood.
