Tūranga - Urban Explorations: Ōtākaro Orchard
Event description
Urban Explorations: Join us for a walk to Ōtākaro Orchard
Join Roz Rolls from Edible Canterbury on a tour of the Ōtākaro Orchard.
Along the way Roz will talk about the history of the project, the food forest philosophy and integrated food systems, followed by a tour of the food forest -looking at the different plants and the roles they provide for the system, such as nitrogen fixation, mineral accumulation, attracting beneficial insects, medicinal benefits, and of course edibility.
We will take a look at the ‘green features’ of the orchard's future café and information centre, passive solar heating with adobe mud brick, blue green roof with solar array, compost toilets, and greywater recycling.
Ōtākaro Orchard is a centre for food resilience and environmental awareness. A living learning hub for us and our children, and a precious public asset for the coming centuries; demonstrating a close connection between community and the natural environment with its generous abundance.
Rain or shine, the walk starts and ends at Tūranga.
You are very welcome to join us for an optional cup of tea afterwards in the library.
