Event description

The American Turkish Association of Washington, DC and Kardelen Turkish Dance Ensemble proudly present:

Turkish Dance workshop with Yeliz Dingler

Responding to popular demand for our dance workshops in 2023, we are organizing our third dance workshop to take place on Saturday, March 16.  Put on your dance shoes and learn the basics of two distinct styles of Turkish folk dance:

1. Black Sea Horon (60 minutes):  The horon is typically performed by a group of men or women in a line or semicircle.  The dance symbolizes the wild waves of the Black Sea and the flashing and fluttering of the prized “hamsi” (anchovy) fish after it has been caught by fishermen- fast shoulder shimmy and trembling of the entire body.

2. Halay Potpourri (60 minutes): Halay is a lively and fun line dance performed in central, southern, eastern, and southeastern regions of Turkiye.  Typically, Halay dancers form a circle or a line, while holding each other in many ways, such as finger to finger, shoulder to shoulder, or hand to hand. The last and the first player may hold a piece of cloth. It usually begins slow and speeds up.

Each session will be one-hour long and will cost $20/session. Participants can register for either one session of their choice or for a combined session, which cost $35.

Classes are unisex and both men and women welcome to attend. The workshop will last two-hours in total.  Must be 14 or older to attend the workshop. Beginners and intermediate level dancers are welcome. You do not have to be a dancer to attend these sessions!

Instructor: Yeliz Dingler is a graduate of Ankara State Conservatory, a veteran of the Turkish National Folk Dance Ensemble, a former dancer of Fire of Anatolia, an instructor, and a choreographer. She has more than 20 years of experience teaching and choreographing Turkish folk dances.

Price:

Black Sea Horon: $20

Halay Potpourri: $20

Combined (Horon + Halay): $35

Limited space available. Please buy tickets in advance. For questions contact: rsvp@atadc.org

The workshop will take place in a private venue in Courthouse, Arlington and the exact address will be shared with those who register.
