Turning Down the Heat
Description
This in-person, interactive workshop is part of Monash’s Brave Conversations Project, a Vice-Chancellor-supported initiative that helps educators develop practical approaches to facilitating constructive dialogue across differences. The project focuses on supporting people to listen across perspectives, sit with discomfort and engage with complex issues thoughtfully and respectfully.
This workshop is designed for educators who have previously participated in Teaching Through Tension and want to build confidence responding to moderate and extreme classroom disruptions — the moments that catch even experienced teachers off guard. Working with trained student actors, you'll step into realistic scenarios drawn from university classrooms, practise de-escalation and facilitation techniques in real time, and get structured feedback from peers and facilitators. Participants leave with a clearer sense of their own instincts under pressure, a set of tested strategies for responding to disruption, and a community of colleagues navigating the same terrain.
Eligibility
Please note that this workshop is only open to fixed-term and tenured Monash educators who have completed the prerequisite Teaching Through Tension workshop.
If more sessions are made available for casual and sessional staff in the future, the MEA will contact you directly.
Please register using your Monash staff email address.
Participants will receive three points of Recognised Professional Learning by attending the workshop and completing the reflective activity.
