Turtle Nest Survey - Murrundi Wetland Reserve
Event description
It’s Turtle Nesting Season!
Freshwater turtles are nesting, and this is a crucial time for their conservation, especially in the Murray-Darling system in South Australia, where their numbers are sadly declining. To make a difference, we need your help in gathering information about their nesting sites. By identifying nesting hotspots, we can implement effective conservation measures to ensure more young turtles thrive in our waterways.
We’re starting early to take advantage of the cooler morning weather, especially if it’s a warm day.
The survey will involve a pleasant 2-hour walk along the water’s edge, where we’ll look for signs of turtle nests disturbed by foxes. When we find these nests, we’ll use the TurtleSAT app to record their locations, contributing to vital conservation efforts.
Please note: if the fire weather forecast reaches Extreme or Catastrophic levels, we will need to cancel and reschedule the survey for a later date. We’ll confirm any cancellations via email after 5 PM the day before the event, based on the latest weather updates.
Let’s work together to protect our turtles!
