Twentieth-Century Uyghur History: Uyghur Nationalism and the East Turkistan Republics

Dr. Nabijan Tursun

Thursday, 25 September | 12pm - 1:30pm

Dr Nabijan Tursun is a Uyghur historian and journalist. He is the author of thirteen-volume General Uyghur History (in Uyghur), with select volumes translated into English and Turkish. Several volumes of this work are dedicated to a detailed analysis of landmark events in twentieth-century Uyghur history, particularly the history of the first (1933-4) and second (1944-49) East Turkistan Republics, which were established in what is today the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Dr Tursun’s combines a deep knowledge of Uyghur sources with extensive use of Soviet and Chinese archival materials. In this discussion Dr Tursun will reflect on the writing of this work and on the modern historiography of the Uyghurs. Q&A to follow.
