Typical Girls: Absolute Beginner Guitar | Term 4 | 2026

Always dreamed of picking up a guitar and just don't know where to start? Tried to teach yourself and felt overwhelmed?

Fear not, learning guitar is hard and Rachel knows it - she will guide you through five foundational weeks to kick start your guitar journey.

We'll start with the basics of learning about the guitar and how to tune it, conditioning our fingers, learning first chords and strumming patterns, and we'll play simple but satisfying songs, all in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Learning with the support and company of a small friendly group can be a lot more motivating and fun, easing the way in to playing with confidence and enjoyment. 

The name Typical Girls was inspired by UK punk band, The Slits. In this group we are about feminism, uplifting women, building community and smashing the patriarchy one chord at a time.

The course runs for 5 weeks so you can get a taste and see how you find it, there will be an option to sign up for a second block of 5 weeks for those who are keen to continue. 

Tuesdays 6.30pm - 7.30pm at NECCHi Newlands, 20 M`urray Rd, Coburg North

BYO guitar - preferably acoustic but you are welcome to learn on an electric. A small number of guitars will be available to loan - please get in contact to arrange.

Meet Rachel:

Rachel is a local singer-songwriter who took up guitar and songwriting in her 40's through participating in Melbourne's vibrant community music scene. After completing two years of music studies at Melbourne Polytechnic, she felt drawn to offering opportunities for women and gender diverse folk to explore their musical aspirations in a supportive and encouraging environment, and began her Typical Girls Guitar Group. She now has 7 years of group and private music teaching experience, and loves seeing the joy, connection, and wellbeing that community music making can create.
