UC Alumni Event in New York

We're looking forward to bringing UC alumni together for a special evening at Jutta Gallery, hosted by UC alum Ronnie Peters.

New Work to New York from New Zealand brings together twelve current students from across the Ilam School Fine Arts, University of Canterbury, with twelve alumni from that programme in an artistic exchange that spans generation and diverse set of art practices.  The students were each given an imperial half-sheet piece of watercolour paper, 530 x 380 mm / 21 x 15 in, and asked to generate an artwork that would be handed over to an alumni to then work on as well.  

The provocation for both parties was that they would not meet and discuss what their work was about or who they were, but rather to simply apply their ideas and motifs to each piece of paper in something akin to an artistic duet.  This project is designed to be an open-ended, playful and reflexive exercise, which goes beyond studio disciplines and peer group associations and instead is a simple act of artistic exchange between two people across a single artwork.  

In the spirit of the initial invitation, speed of the exercise and wanting to have a light footprint (metaphorically, ethically and pragmatically), the exhibitions curators, Aaron Kreisler and Lee Richardson, went with a simple format that could be responded to directly, transported and hung in the gallery efficiently and with little fuss.

So, NWNYNZ will see twelve artworks on show at Jutta Gallery, New York, for a brief period before winging its back to New Zealand for a subsequent showcase at Ilam Campus Gallery, University of Canterbury, in early 2027.
