Are you interested in why Lake Tuggeranong gets algal blooms, the water quality of the Lake or what you can do to help?

UC researchers from the Centre for Applied Water Science have been studying algal blooms and the water quality at Lake Tuggeranong for the past seven years and will be part of SouthFest 2024 to answer all your questions and offer fun, hands-on water activities and displays to help you understand your local lake.

Our focus on the day will be on the quality of water in Lake Tuggeranong and what is causing the algal blooms, which not only look unsightly and can smell but can make the water unsafe for recreation and impact the Lake's biodiversity. Our ACT Government partners will also be attending to engage members of the community about how they can help improve the water quality of the Lake. Registrations are not required, just come over and visit us!

Meet the researchers:

1. Professor Fiona Dyer has conducted research on water quality in Canberra’s urban lakes, ponds and creeks for the past 25 years. Her recent focus has been on understanding what is causing the blue-green algal blooms in Lake Tuggeranong.
2. Dr Rod Ubrihien: Rodney is a water scientist with specific interests in nutrient cycles and blue-green algae blooms. His current research focusses include urban nutrient cycling and blue-green algal blooms in urban lakes and he leads the research in Lake Tuggeranong for the University.

This event is hosted by the Centre for Applied Water Science at the University of Canberra in partnership with ACT Government Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate and Tuggeranong Community Council as part of SouthFest 2024.
