Culture, Climate and Human Rights: How does the law deal with the consequences?
In 2023, initiated by “Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change”, the idea emerged of approaching the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to request a ruling on the legal dimensions of climate change. It was taken up by the Vanuatu government and passed by an almost unanimous vote at the 2023 UN General Assembly. In July 2025, the ICJ issued its Advisory Opinion on this important global issue and the legal obligations associated with it. The presentation will include references to the Falepili Union treaty between Australia and Tuvalu.
