Housing: Taming the Elephant in the Economy
Event description
Uncovering the impacts of housing system outcomes on Australia’s economy
The housing market played only a modest role in the Budget just delivered by the Treasurer. However, now worth some $8.1tn, many would argue housing is the elephant in the Australian economy whose actual economic impact is little appreciated by governments. In fact, housing has major and complex roles at the centre of the national economy with fundamental effects on long-term economic productivity, stability and inequality. Failure to understand these effects is likely to undermine future economic growth.
We hope you will join us for the launch of a new report from the Housing Productivity Research Consortium on the ways that the operation of Australia’s housing system is imposing growing risks and burdens for the wider economy – realities as yet largely ignored by government.
Building on our earlier work, the report draws together international research evidence on the interconnectedness of housing, economic performance and financial stability. In many high income nations, increasingly dysfunctional housing systems are a growing impost on national economies. Yet these kinds of impacts – and their resulting risks – are particularly apparent in Australia.
In addition, the report highlights findings from our own recently undertaken research that gauged the related opinions, understandings and expectations of 87 leading Australian economists and other housing market experts.
Based on the research and review findings, the report advocates a range of far-reaching institutional reforms as a basis for re-shaping Australia’s housing system to strengthen economic productivity, as well as to reduce exposure to financial instability, and to stem rising inequality.
Please join us for a presentation of the report’s main findings by project director Professor Duncan MacLennan, followed by a discussion involving three leading Australian panellists spanning economics and business.
This is both an in person and virtual event.
