Understanding Autism in Teens
Event description
FREE EVENT : Understanding Autism in Teens - Education Session
For parents and carers of teenagers who are – or may be – neurodivergent with a focus on Autism.
Proudly hosted by headspace Port Macquarie on August 8th 2024, Understanding Autism in Teens, is designed for parents and carers who want to understand Autism, how it may look in teens and some practical strategies for support.
The session will be facilitated by Dr Melanie Heyworth founder of Reframing Autism and supported by the headspace Family Reference Group.
Dr Heyworth is an Autistic parent of Autistic teens, an Autism researcher focusing on family and Autistic wellbeing, and as the founder and Head of Research at the Autistic-led Australian charity, Reframing Autism she brings a wealth of knowledge to the event. The headspace Family Reference Group are a group of volunteers made up of parents and community members that assist service delivery by making headspace a family inclusive practice. As a collective, they identified a need for this type of education in our community, and have advocated behind the scenes to bring it to life!
The workshop will be an informative and interactive education session, to support attendees to learn more about neurodiversity, primarily focusing Autism. It will cover:

- What Autism might look like in teens and young people
- How experiences of inertia, anxiety, sensory and social overwhelm, executive functioning and demand avoidance shape your and your teen’s life
