Understanding Children's Drawings and School Readiness

Looking at children's archetypal drawn symbols can give us developmental insight and accompany the ready for school discussion.

When deciding on whether or not for a child to embark on the journey into more formal learning in a school setting, parents and teachers can understandably feel quite unsure. School readiness is not something to be achieved by a particular date. It can only be a part of the gradual developmental process - step by step over time.

To begin formal learning along with many others - all uniquely different - is quite an ask. We cannot expect that a child will have a tick in every box on the list of necessary achievements. During our discussion we will revisit all the principles that have guided us in the raising of children towards their sixth year and look at what is emerging for the child developmentally. By continuing to practice careful and accurate observation of the child - by deep knowing - guided by Rudolf Steiner’s picture of human development it becomes possible to make a more carefully informed decision.

Paulene Hanna is an early childhood teaching professional who, though retired from daily teaching practice in Steiner education, is actively involved in mentoring and supporting Steiner early childhood teachers and kindergartens. Paulene works with the challenge of an increasingly fearfully orientated community, which lacks the time and space for children generally. She supports parents to understand their children’s behaviour and to enjoy the blessings that being with children offers.
