Understanding harmful behaviours and responding to students in distress
Event description
Understanding Harmful Behaviours and Responding to Students in Distress is part of the University’s commitment to providing a supportive and safe environment to prevent harmful behaviours such as gendered harassment, sexual assault and racism on campus. This training session assists participants in understanding how harmful behaviours are expressed in our community and how to intervene if we witness something.
Participants from RSAA will learn how to provide an initial response to a student in distress that is trauma-informed and person-centred. We will explore how to use the Harmful Behaviours Disclosure Tool and understand available referral and escalation pathways within ANU and in the community.
Key takeaways
At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
• Understand harmful behaviours and how they are experienced within the Australian and university context
• Identify ways to create safer environments and bystander intervention strategies
• Understand what constitutes a disclosure of harmful behaviour
• Respond appropriately to disclosures from students and staff
• Identify available support services and existing escalation protocols
