Understanding Hoarding and Squalor - Two Part Workshop Series for CHSP Staff and Volunteers

Service providers often encounter challenging situations involving people living in excessive clutter that undermines the functionality, safety and health of their home. Understanding the behaviours and psychology behind hoarding and squalor, equips staff and volunteers with intervention strategies and skills to build trust and rapport with individuals experiencing hoarding and squalor challenges and prevent further re-traumatisation. These workshops will provide case scenarios relevant to the aged care sector.

Please note that this series consists of two workshops.

Workshop One Details
Date: Monday 19 May 2025
Time: 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Where: Online Via Zoom

Learning Objectives:

Understand Hoarding Disorder (HD) and Severe Domestic Squalor (SDS) – including the DSM 5 Diagnostic Criteria
Understand the behaviours, psychology and emotional attachments that people with HD and SDS experience
Effectively identify the presence of HD & SDS

Workshop Two Details
Date: Monday 26 May 2025
Time: 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Where: Online Via Zoom

Learning Objectives:

Identify appropriate intervention strategies – what works vs what doesn’t
Effectively use Assessment Tools in inform work practice
