Event description

More than one story: Understanding intersectionality in education

Every learner, and every educator, brings multiple, intersecting identities into the classroom. Race, gender, class, disability, sexuality, culture and language all shape how people experience education. In this session, we’ll explore how intersectionality helps us understand these overlapping experiences and how systems of power and privilege operate in schools and learning spaces. Together, we’ll consider how educators can create learning environments that don’t just include but affirm the complexity of every learner’s identity.

Facilitator:

Dr Cate Thomas has a diverse working and academic career in health, human services, leadership, and management. She has demonstrated leadership and influence in academic, government, and non-government arenas. Cate’s research is focused on intersectionality, gender equity in higher education, and intersectionality as a lens to practice and research. She founded the Social Equality, Intersectionality and Inclusion Research Group (SEIIRG) which has national and international members and is on the executive committee of the Gender and Education Association (UK).
