Understanding Racism and Anti-racism

Develop a stronger understanding of racism, anti-racism and the ways power, privilege and intersectionality can shape people’s experiences.

This session will help participants build the knowledge and awareness needed to recognise racism and take a more actively anti-racist approach within their organisation.

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

• Have a clearer understanding of racism and how it can operate at individual, organisational and societal levels.

• Understand what an anti-racist approach means in practice.

• Explore the role of power and privilege in shaping experiences and opportunities.

• Understand intersectionality and how different aspects of identity can combine to affect people’s experiences.

• Be better equipped to reflect on racism and anti-racism within their own organisation and practice.

About the facilitator

Pheona Matovu is Strategic Director and co-founder of Radiant and Brighter CIC, an organisation established to promote diversity, integration and economic participation through education, training and community support. Drawing on both professional and lived experience, Pheona’s work includes helping organisations develop greater understanding of cultural diversity, inclusion and the barriers experienced by minority ethnic communities.
