The Session
This session presents findings from RAA’s 2026 research project mapping the geographic spread of registered architects across regional Australia. The government-funded research is being undertaken by University of Tasmania PhD candidate and RAA intern, Hanna Shojaee Pour, supervised by RAA Secretary, Sarah Aldridge. Data has been built from state registers starting with New South Wales, ACT, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania and reconciled against ABS regional classifications, with the aim of building a reliable and comparable picture of the regional profession’s scale and distribution. The session covers the method, what the data shows so far, and the questions being addressed as the project moves into its next stage. We are keen to seek member input about what data or overlays would be interesting and useful for your practice. Once we have concluded the basic data sets, we are looking to apply overlays to use the data to influence advocacy, services to LGAs and membership activities.

Project Rationale
The research project, funded by the Federal Government through the University of Tasmania, aims to link PhD research students with member organisations to provide unique research to support the work of the organisation. This project has been designed to support RAA in understanding the landscape of regional architecture practices throughout Australia, beyond its current members.

Hanna Shojaee Pour
Hanna Shojaee Pour is a PhD candidate in Architecture & Design at the University of Tasmania and a research intern with the Regional Architecture Association. Her doctoral research examines how architecture firms present their practice through online media.
