Understanding SoCal Weather: From El Niño to Santa Ana Winds – Oct 3, 2026

Southern California's weather can feel both predictable and surprising. Why do we have (and what can we expect from) El Niño or La Niña years? Why do some winters bring flooding rains while others remain stubbornly dry? Why does the marine layer linger some days and disappear suddenly on others? What causes powerful Santa Ana winds? Why do we have such rich biodiversity, and what makes the “Mediterranean-type” climate of the California Florist Province so special?

Join Professor Emeritus and naturalist William Selby, author of The California Sky Watcher, for an engaging and conversational exploration of the forces that shape Southern California's unique climate and weather. Drawing on decades of observation and research, Selby will explain how ocean temperatures and our changing weather patterns and climates are transforming our coastlines, inland valleys, mountains, deserts, and all the landscapes we call home.

Through stories, science, and local examples, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the seasonal patterns and interconnected systems that drive rainfall, drought, wildfire conditions, and shape plant communities across the region. Whether you're a gardener, naturalist, or simply curious about the skies above Southern California, this class will help you better understand the climate story unfolding around us every day.

William Selby taught an assortment of earth science courses (including weather and climate) as professor at Santa Monica College and Visiting Professor at the UCs. Selby has led hundreds of field classes throughout the state and beyond. He has helped establish environmental programs at SMC, served as a consultant for films (such as Dry Times) and the community, and produced field guide booklets. His enduring 550-page book, Rediscovering the Golden State: California Geography, is in its 4th edition. He draws on decades of personal and professional weather observations and climate research experience from numerous sources (including the National Weather Service) for his latest Heyday book project, The California Sky Watcher.
